Chu\u0165 tohoto n\u00e1poje je lehce naho\u0159kl\u00e1 a jeho fanou\u0161ci jej snadno poznaj\u00ed podle typick\u00e9 v\u016fn\u011b. Jedn\u00e1 se o destil\u00e1t, kter\u00fd se po v\u00fdrobn\u00edm procesu jednodu\u0161e nech\u00e1 chv\u00edli odle\u017eet (nest\u00e1\u0159\u00ed se jako nap\u0159\u00edklad whisky) a n\u00e1sledn\u011b se st\u00e1\u010d\u00ed do lahv\u00ed. Historie tohoto destil\u00e1tu sah\u00e1 do 16. stolet\u00ed, kdy byl vynalezen Dr. Sylviem v Holandsku. Ten jej p\u016fvodn\u011b m\u00ednil pou\u017e\u00edt na l\u00e9\u010den\u00ed pot\u00ed\u017e\u00ed s ledvinami. Tento sv\u016fj produkt nazval Genever, co\u017e je francouzsk\u00e9 ozna\u010den\u00ed pro jalovec, kter\u00fd ji\u017e tehdy byl hlavn\u00ed slo\u017ekou lihu. Angli\u010dt\u00ed voj\u00e1ci, kte\u0159\u00ed tehdy na pevnin\u011b Evropy bojovali, jej nazvali \u201eholandsk\u00e1 kur\u00e1\u017e\u201c a pot\u00e9, co Vil\u00e9m III. Oran\u017esk\u00fd uchv\u00e1til britskou korunu, se tento mok dostal do Anglie. Ji\u017e v t\u00e9to dob\u011b lid\u00e9 zjistili, jak lahodn\u011b chutn\u00e1 s tonikem (ten se tehdy pou\u017e\u00edval jako prevence proti mal\u00e1rii). Kv\u016fli vysok\u00e9mu clu na dov\u00e1\u017een\u00e9 lihoviny si jej Angli\u010dan\u00e9 za\u010dali vyr\u00e1b\u011bt, a\u017e se stal jedn\u00edm z nejobl\u00edben\u011bj\u0161\u00edch destil\u00e1t\u016f v\u016fbec. Tento anglick\u00fd gin se vyr\u00e1b\u011bl stejn\u011b jako holandsk\u00fd, pro zjemn\u011bn\u00ed chut\u011b se do n\u011bj ale p\u0159id\u00e1val cukr. V 19. stolet\u00ed za\u010dali Angli\u010dan\u00e9 experimentovat s v\u00fdrobou neslazen\u00e9ho neboli such\u00e9ho (dry) ginu. Giny Lihov\u00e1rek tak nab\u00edz\u00ed velk\u00e9 mno\u017estv\u00ed druh\u016f a chut\u00ed tohoto skv\u011bl\u00e9ho destil\u00e1tu. V dne\u0161n\u00ed dob\u011b v\u011bt\u0161ina produkce ginu poch\u00e1z\u00ed pr\u00e1v\u011b z Velk\u00e9 Brit\u00e1nie a tak\u00e9 z USA. Nejd\u0159\u00edve se vyrob\u00ed obiln\u00fd destil\u00e1t z kuku\u0159ice, je\u010dmene \u010di jin\u00fdch obilovin v destila\u010dn\u00edm p\u0159\u00edstroji. Pot\u00e9 se do tohoto destil\u00e1tu p\u0159idaj\u00ed byliny a dal\u0161\u00ed dochucovadla a znovu se destiluje nebo se prov\u00e1d\u00ed redestilace s bylinkami zav\u011b\u0161en\u00fdmi v destila\u010dn\u00edm p\u0159\u00edstroji nad destil\u00e1tem.
